Less than two kilometers out into the ocean, the boat is approaching a reef. It's important to note that it is not a reef in English, but rather a barrier reef. This means that the ocean is crossed by small sandbars and shallow water areas that exist at some places along the reef. The boat must navigate through these areas to arrive at the open ocean again.
